As we unwind the last thread of 2023, the Abelian Foundation proudly looks back on a year of dynamic growth and achievements within the realm of privacy-preserving and quantum-safe blockchain technology.

Our mission to provide a robust, quantum-resistant Abelian blockchain, fortified with advanced lattice-based cryptography, has seen significant advancements this year. Not only have we enhanced our mining software, ensuring upgraded security and efficiency, but we’ve also seen focused accomplishments regarding access and usability to our native cryptocurrency $ABEL with our first CEX listings. The listing came alongside with substantial upgrades to our desktop wallet, alongside the launch and enhancements of our mobile wallet. Our active participation in various conferences and AMA sessions, coupled with the launch community campaigns, has further solidified our commitment to building a secure, privacy-oriented future.

As we reflect on a year of pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in providing different levels of privacy and enabling users to create their own quantum-resistant tokens, we invite you to join us in celebrating these milestones and explore the quantum-safe, privacy-centric world of Abelian.

Achievements in Mining Software Upgrade

“Infrastructure” was a big keyword for Abelian in 2023. The entire team prioritized building a secure and robust infrastructure for the past 12 months completing a total of 8 updates to the infrastructure software. This securely built infrastructure aligns with the Abelian Foundation’s ultimate goal of becoming a post-quantum Layer 0 in the world of Blockchain.

🔹 Through efforts from both the foundation and community, there are over 200,000 GPU cards mining in the Abelian Network. This is a big leap from less than 10,000 in the beginning of this year.

🔹 The difficulty rate of Abelian’s mining network also experienced a big boost, with Dr. Duncan Wong announcing a 50% jump in difficulty in October. Since October, the mining difficulty increased by a total of 151.11% as the mined block height is at 239526 and the difficulty at an impending 400,000.

The higher the difficulty levels improve security of blockchain — this is a major accomplishment that could only be made possible through the Abelian Team’s hard work in upgrading the mining software.

Here are some of the major mining software updates of 2023:

Before we begin, here’s a brief 2022 recap.

In 2022, the Abelian Full Node newly adopted a variant of ETHash POW for fighting against ASIC mining. The Abelian Full Node featured enhanced memory usage and lower minimum memory requirements of just 4GB. A new command at abectl for miners to check their mining speed and the fund transfer / payment function became available.

Ok, back to 2023..

1. GPU Mining

In March 2023, the Abelian Foundation released its first GPU Mining software. At this time, Charlie was the only mining pool operated by the Abelian Foundation. In July, the foundation completed another update where miners freely pick any of the 4 servers to connect to, regardless of GPU or CPU usage. Automatic failover feature between pool servers was set up earlier in April, eliminating miners’ need to worry about system crash of any single GPU pool server.

This update was significant as it signaled towards a more resilient network and the capacity to support a lot more miners

2. Abelian Full Node

On the 20th of November, Abelian’s Full Node went through a major upgrade, pushing the pre-existing version of full node down to the name of a Semi-Full Node. The new full-node 0.12.3 was upgraded to store all data including the including the witness of transactions from the Genesis block while the previous full node — now, Semi-Full Node — stopped storing data after checkpoints.

The new full node release was a big step towards a more robustly decentralized POW network.

3. Solo GPU Mining

In June 2023, with the release of abec-v.0.11.0, the foundation introduced Solo GPU Mining which delivers the benefits of bigger rewards for miners while building a more decentralized network. Solo GPU mining means instead of connecting to a mining pool server Charlie or Dior, miners connect the GPU mining pool client, abelminer v2.0.2, to a self-run Abelian Full Node (abec v0.11.10).

The introduction of Solo GPU Mining was possible due to Abelian’s capacity to support a lot of miners, and it helped expand Abelian’s mining community.

4. Reduction in Pool Fees

Prior to the 13th of November, the Abelian Foundation collected a pool fee of 30% from mining. The collected pool fees were used as marketing and community-building budget. As the foundation’s mining ecosystem grew, the foundation made the decision that it was time to reduce pool fees from 30% to 5%. The new pool fee rate was effective from block 216,000, a decision made as appreciative towards towards our dedicated miner community supporting the network.

5. Community-Made Pools

On the 9th of November, abelpool.io was released as the foundation’s first community-made pool. abelpool.io was good news to the entire community as it supported HiveOS, an operating system that many miners were looking for.

Since the release, the abelpool.io community has grown to 435 members and the team is continuously working on better usability for miners. The pool’s most recent update feature auto generated long address according the short address in address binding page, and a function that allows miners to use mobile wallet address/ exchange deposit address to mine on abelpool.io directly

Last week, the second community-made pool zkProvers launched with a great start of 6,000 GPU cards running. zkProvers also supports various operating systems .

In early 2023, the Abelian Foundation only had 2 mining pools in operation. We’re wrapping up 2023 with a total of 7 mining pools — five operated by the Abelian Foundation and two community-run pools. This past year, the tech team worked fervently to bring optimized security, efficiency and usability to the foundation’s mining pools — Alicia, Baker, Charlie and Dior. The Abelian Foundation continues to support individuals to build mining pools on Abelian’s POW ecosystem. Please contact the Admin on Abelian’s Discord or Telegram if you’re interested in building!

Achievements in Abelian Wallet

1. Desktop Wallet

On February, 2023 — the Abelian Desktop Wallet was released for the first time. This provided an easier method for miners to keep track of the total number of $ABEL they mined.

The Abelian Tech team was able to roll out a total of 4 updates on the Abelian Wallet, a post-quantum wallet with an easy-to-use graphical interface providing recovery phrases and functions to send or receive $ABEL . Here are some of the major Abelian Wallet updates of 2023:

In July, version 0.2.0 of the desktop wallet was released introducing a short wallet address feature, as the previous ABEL wallet’s post-quantum public key address was much longer than a conventional one. Each short address was designed to be only 66 bytes long, which made it more convenient for sending and receiving ABELs than before.

After a small upgrade fixing MacOS bug fixes, version 0.3.0 of the Abelian Desktop Wallet was released offering a faster syncing speed by 10x to 100x (depending on users’ network speed) and disk usage reduced by 80% (from more than 270GB to around 54GB).

Since its release the Abelian Desktop Wallet has been the hottest issue within community, with community members helping each other out on installing and syncing the desktop wallet.

Currently, the Abelian Desktop wallet supports 3 languages: English, Chinese and Vietnamese.

2. Mobile Wallet

In December, the first Abelian Mobile Wallet launched with usability as easy as conventional crypto wallets. The quantum-proof mobile wallet was released in 3 languages (English, Chinese and Vietnamese) and came equipped with an auto-synchronization feature that rid of the synchronization obstacle many users experienced while installing the desktop wallet.

The mobile wallet is available on both IOS and AOS devices, and allows users to easily and securely store mined, or purchased $ABEL with absolutely zero hassle.

In the short period that the mobile wallet has been public, it has been through 2 upgrades — including one that installed a Super-Node on the back-end wallet server offering the ability to scan the entire Abelian ledger with 0 security risks, perfectly synchronize blocks automatically and ensure the instant reception and balance update of $ABEL in users’ wallets. Another update that happened last week improved usability by exporting long address and showing details page for each transaction. The foundation also released a tutorial to integrate users’ desktop wallet to mobile wallet for a more holistic user experience.

The Abelian mobile wallet is a giant step towards the mass adoption of quantum-resistant technology and the foundation will continue to improve usability and efficiency of the software.
